SILENT NO MORE

As Parliament rises for the summer, we are announcing a National Day of Action on September 21, 2026 calling for a government apology for Canada’s forced and coerced adoption practices.

In 2018, the Senate released The Shame Is Ours, documenting the systemic separation of unmarried mothers from their newborns and recommending a National Apology within one year. Eight years have passed with silence.

​

That silence ends now.

​

This summer, we will begin a series of gatherings, vigils, and community events across the country — a movement that will grow throughout the summer and lead into a coordinated National Day of Action when Parliament returns.

​

Across the country, momentum is building. Survivors, adoptees, families, and allies from intersecting movements — reproductive justice, disability justice, Indigenous rights, anti‑violence, and human rights — are standing in solidarity and adding their voices to this call. What began as a small circle of truth‑tellers is growing into a broad, cross‑movement effort demanding accountability, transparency, and dignity for those who lived this history.

 

Public‑witness artist Christine Nayler will accompany these gatherings with the Empty Chair / Empty Cradle installation, traveling through key cities including Toronto and Montreal before arriving in Ottawa. Created as an act of solidarity and truth‑telling, the installation is offered to the movement as a visual witness to the lives, losses, and histories at the heart of this call for a National Apology.
